چکیده

An experimental study of scalar mixing in a laminar vortex is presented for vortices generated between two gas streams flowing parallel to each other in a rectangular flow channel. An isolated line vortex is initiated on demand by momentarily increasing one stream velocity in relation to the other using an electromagnetically actuated piston. The temporal piston motion profile is tailored to generate vortices of different strengths corresponding to vortex Reynolds numbers, Re ” C/ 2pm=130–210. Evolution ofmixing ismonitored by laserinduced fluorescence of acetone vapor premixed into one of the gas streams as the vortex structure evolves with increasing downstream distance from its point of origin. Vortex is generated by pulsing either of the gas streams (seeded or unseeded stream). Vortex initiation process affects the abundance of the gas in the vortex core from the pulsed stream. Spatial mixing statistics are obtained by determining scalar concentration probability density functions (pdf) and the mean mixed fluid concentrations obtained from these pdfs. It is found that the interfacial area generation as a result of vortex kinematics and molecular diffusion along this interface are principally responsible for mixing. The mean mixed fluid concentration in the vortex interaction region scales with the product of vortex circulation and the elapsed time of interaction. These results are similar to those found in liquid mixing experiments, but the rate of mixing is significantly higher due to higher diffusivity of gases.

Thermal Field Around a Circular Cylinder with Periodic Vortex Shedding

A numerical study is carried out to investigate the laminar forced convection heat transfer from a circular cylinder. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible, the Reynolds number ranged from 0.1 to 1000, and the Prandtl number was equal to 0.7. The range of study includes heat transfer in creeping flow (Re40). The equations were discretized by a control-volume-based finite difference techniqu...

Large eddy simulation of propane combustion in a planar trapped vortex combustor

Propane combustion in a trapped vortex combustor (TVC) is characterized via large eddy simulation coupled with filtered mass density function. A computational algorithm based on high order finite difference (FD) schemes, is employed to solve the Eulerian filtered compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In contrast, a Lagrangian Monte-Carlo solver based on the filtered mass density function is inv...

Random Vortex Method for Geometries with Unsolvable Schwarz-Christoffel Formula

In this research we have implemented the Random Vortex Method to calculate velocity fields of fluids inside open cavities in both turbulent and laminar flows. the Random Vortex Method is a CFD method (in both turbulent and laminar fields) which needs the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation formula to map the physical geometry into the upper half plane. In some complex geometries like the flow in...

On the dynamics of flame edges in diffusion-flame/vortex interactions

We analyze the local flame extinction and reignition of a counterflow diffusion flame perturbed by a laminar vortex ring. Local flame extinction leads to the appearance of flame edges separating the burning and extinguished regions of the distorted mixing layer. The dynamics of these edges is modeled based on previous numerical results, with heat release effects fully taken into account, which ...

Quantitative scalar dissipation rate measurements in vortex perturbed counterflow diffusion flames

Even though the scalar dissipation rate at the stoichiometric surface, stoich, is recognized to be the most fundamental fluid time scale in laminar diffusion flames, their structure and extinction behavior is often characterized simply in terms of strain rate, a much more easily measurable observable. Yet, the two variables are different, especially in unsteady flamelets. An experimental techni...
